Learning platforms for children while at home

A blog piece by the C4C Team

With many children now at home instead if at school as a result of the spread of Covid19, the responsibility of schooling has fallen to parents. As an organisation who understand the importance of education in child development, we wanted to provide a guide to some useful resources that you could use with your child during this time.

As well as using these resources we would also advise the following:

  • Stick to a routine as children benefit from structure, particularly at worrying times.
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of play & fun (this should still feature at part of the school day)
  • Do your best with the resources and time you have. Don’t put lots of pressure on yourself as a parent to achieve unrealistic home-schooling goals. Creating unnecessary stress may have a negative impact on the whole family at a time when things will already be stressful.

Shule Direct: Provides online learning materials for secondary school students, from form 1 to form 4. The material includes notes for both curriculum studies and extracurricular studies. It also uses artificial intelligence to provide instant responses to questions asked by students. During this period of school suspension, they have prepared mid-term tests for secondary students. Services can be accessed through their mobile app on both iOS and androids, also through their website: https://www.shuledirect.co.tz/ for Tanzania, and https://www.shuledirect.co.ke/ for Kenya.

Ubongo Toolkits: Offers free digital-based localised education resources (videos, audios and worksheets) for kids aged 0-14, covering various topics from early numeracy, pre-literacy, and social and emotional skills to engineering, science and technology. Also, they have added contents for Health & Hygiene as a way to prevent COVID-19 and also content on Caregivers engagement with their kid’s learning. The materials can be accessed at their website, http://toolkits.ubungo.org/ also by joining their Caregiver’s WhatsApp group. You can also tune-in to their programs aired in different local television stations including on TBC1 Monday to Friday at 2:30pm and Saturday and Sunday at 9:00am. They are also broadcasting their contents on EATV, Azam TV and on 11 radio stations across the country. For their detailed broadcasting schedule please visit here: https://www.ubongo.org/

MTABE: Uses artificial intelligence to provide instant curriculum-aligned answers to secondary school students [Form 1 – Form 6] using a chat-based search engine that works online and offline. It also provides notes for different subjects and timed tests. At the moment, you can access their service through their mobile application on android devices. To reach out to more students, they will soon launch the Telegram and WhatsApp version of their service and also reactivate the SMS version after loading it with more contents. Keep a close eye on their website for updates: https://mtabeapp.com/

SmartClass: An online platform that connects students to very qualified and certified private tutors both online and offline. SmartClass does this by capitalizing on big data analytics and using advanced algorithmic matching between students and tutors. https://www.smartclass-tz.com/

THE C4C APPROACH

  • WE BELIEVE that if every adult is empowered to protect children then we can collectively build safe and inclusive societies for everyone in Africa.

  • WE IDENTIFY Citizens 4 Change who protect children via household surveys, com-munity meet-ups and our civil society partners, finding out about their mind-sets and actions via interviews, surveys and polls.

  • WE USE CIVIC TECH to map Citizens 4 Change and visualise their impact.

  • WE EQUIP Citizens 4 Change with new knowledge, tools and relationships, via access to online courses and community conversations.

  • WE MOBILISE Citizens 4 Change to take more action to protect children, spread the word about the C4C community, create demand for their local leaders to invest in children’s services, and participate in community planning and budgeting processes.

WE BELIEVE IN CHANGE

Citizens 4 Change (C4C) is a community of East African citizens who do the right thing by children and young people. Our mission is to widen the circle of care so that every child has a trusted, supportive adult in their lives, and is protected from harm.
